"People do not breathe, and as they go through difficult experiences, they hold their breath," Konfino details. "In circular breathing, you learn to breathe more correctly. Notice, for example, how a baby breathes with their entire body. As we go through life experiences that trouble or frighten us, we hold our breath and eventually adopt a generally shallow breathing pattern that serves us so we don't have to think and feel things. The role of breathing is to connect our thoughts and emotions to our body. Behind every physical injury or ailment, there is a thought and feeling hiding inside. If I have a problem with my eyes, for example—pain from an inflammation or something abnormal—there is a thought or emotion behind it that doesn't want to see. It is not enough to treat only the physical side; we must also invest in the other parts."
