The Hidden Purpose of Our Senses

Written in 2018

For years, I believed my senses were simply tools.

They helped me navigate the world.

They warned me of danger.

They allowed me to communicate, enjoy life, and understand what was happening around me.

Then something changed.

I realized they had been teaching me something much deeper all along.

Every sense has two dimensions.

The physical one...

and the inner one.

Smell

Our sense of smell has an extraordinary relationship with memory and emotion.

A familiar scent can calm us within seconds.

It can bring back safety.

Comfort.

Peace.

That is why natural scents and essential oils can sometimes help soften fear and anxiety.

Not because they heal the root of the problem,

but because they create enough space for healing to begin.

Then I discovered another kind of smell.

The ability to sense danger before anything happens.

Or to recognize an opportunity long before anyone else sees it.

Perhaps intuition has its own sense of smell.

Taste

We usually associate taste with pleasure.

Yet it also teaches us something about life itself.

Some experiences nourish us.

Others leave a bitter taste.

Sometimes we cannot digest what life brings us.

Sometimes we reject it completely.

The way we taste life often reflects the way we experience it.

Hearing

We use hearing to communicate.

To enjoy music.

To recognize danger.

Sound can calm us.

It can comfort us.

It can even help release emotional tension.

But there is another kind of listening.

Listening beneath the words.

Listening beyond opinions.

Listening until we recognize truth.

That kind of listening begins inside us.

Sight

Vision is perhaps our most dominant sense.

A single image can change our emotions in an instant.

It can fill us with joy.

Or fear.

But there is another kind of seeing.

Seeing beyond appearances.

Beyond labels.

Beyond the masks people wear.

Learning to recognize what is true,

rather than only what is visible.

Touch

Touch can comfort.

Touch can heal.

Touch can also wound.

We express love,

care,

grief,

and compassion through touch.

Yet the most powerful touch is the one we rarely think about.

The moment we allow ourselves to touch our own pain.

Our anger.

Our sadness.

Our fear.

Without running away.

Without trying to fix it.

I believe healing begins there.

And Then There Is Breath

Breath doesn't belong to only one sense.

It gently connects them all.

It softens.

It releases.

It clears the way.

Perhaps that is why conscious breathing has become such an important part of my own journey.

It asks for nothing.

It costs nothing.

Yet it quietly opens the door to every part of ourselves we have forgotten how to feel.
